How do I pray about debt without shame?

Say the number. Shame's whole strategy is to keep the amount unspeakable, and an unspeakable thing cannot be helped. God is not scandalized by arithmetic. Ask for a way through, for mercy from the people you owe, and for the steadiness to open the letters. Then ask for one practical thing you can do this week, and do it. Debt is a situation, not a moral rank.

The prayer's own words are mimaamakim — from the depths: the honest place a person calls out from, not the place they are ashamed to be seen in.

From the sources “Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord.” — Psalm 130
