How do I stop envying what others have?

Say the envy out loud instead of dressing it as principle. Named, it shrinks; unnamed, it turns into contempt and starts calling itself judgement. Then ask for two things: enough for your own life, and the ability to be genuinely glad for someone else. It helps to remember you are comparing your whole life to the visible surface of theirs — you have no idea what their nights are like.

The tradition prizes histapkut — sufficiency, contentment: not owning little, but the harder art of knowing when what you have is enough.

From the sources “Be not afraid when a man becomes rich… he will carry nothing away when he dies.” — Psalm 49
