How do I forgive someone who never apologized?

Understand what you are and are not being asked to do. Forgiveness is not saying it was acceptable, not resuming the relationship, and not pretending you were not hurt. It is letting go of the hope of a past that will now never change. It is usually slow and usually repeated — most people forgive the same wound many times before it stops bleeding. Ask for the willingness before the feeling. The feeling, if it comes, comes last.

The tradition praises the one who is a vatran — who lets a grievance go, who does not stand on every debt owed him: a strength, in that reading, not a surrender.
