How do I begin to pray after someone I love has died?

Begin with their name. That is enough for the first days. You do not have to justify God or find the loss a purpose — those tasks are not required of you. Tell God what you miss, in specifics: the voice, the kitchen, the way they said your name. Let it be unfinished. Grief prayer is company kept in the dark, not an argument to win.

This is nechama — comfort: not the erasing of grief, but a presence that stays with you inside it.

From the sources “The Lord is close to the broken-hearted.” — Psalm 34
