How do I give thanks when the recovery is only partial?
Thank God for exactly what is, not for what you wish it were. Gratitude does not require pretending. Name the specific thing: the pain that eased, the morning without fear, the week you were given. Then say the rest honestly — that you wanted more, still want more, and are asking still. Thanksgiving and petition sit in one prayer without contradiction. A partial mercy is a mercy, and naming it changes the one who names it.
The tradition has a blessing for the one who comes through danger — birkat hagomel: thanks for the deliverance that did come, said without pretending the danger was nothing.
